I
What always throws me off is their lack of singularity. Meaning when I see a designer like Monique Lhuillier I know what to expect, beautiful sumptuous dresses. When I see Michael Kors I know what to expect, exquisite tailoring and staple pieces. Duckie Brown creates both expertly tailored jackets and oddly proportioned trousers, what am I to do with that?
At their show held at Industria Super Studio, I can honestly say I was not impressed. However, looking back at the photos and video I began to see their vision and respect it more and more.
Fashion, especially men’s fashion has been about pairing down and streamlining. Your seams and silhouette should be as sharp as a knife. Steven Cox and Daniel Silver say, “No.” With “shifted hems” and “circular trousers” they are anything but “streamlined”
In hindsight, my favorites included the looks I disliked during the show. The last 6 looks were all black. I originally thought ‘how boring” but looking back I felt drawn into the black, it made me laugh at the way “all black” is supposed to be a New Yorker’s and Fashion Editor’s “uniform.” Except, each look was skewed in some way including the all black patchwork coat or the black double breasted sharply tailored coat paired with Grey sweater trousers. Also, the Grey/Orange/Grape Exploded Plaid circular trouser was also not my favorite day of show but when I looked back at the jacket it was paired with, an Irish Fair Isle Double Breasted fitted jacket I couldn’t help but give a little smile at the playfulness of the interacting prints. Womenswear, lately, has been all about mixing prints and patterns so why not men as well.
In other words, Duckie Brown is: outside the box, interesting, lively and thought-provoking. In the end isn’t that what we want fashion to be?
