Thomas Foutner, better known by his rap moniker 20 Twen hails from East Detroit. After of years of dominating the underground scene, 20 Twen reached nationwide with his critically acclaimed project, “No Feelings”, which received much praise from multi-platinum producer Don Cannon (Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, 50 Cent) and major feedback from Hip-Hop fans from coast to coast. 20 Twen has all the ingredients needed to become a household name in the rap game so make no mistake to overlook this young gunner as he is on his way to stardom. How did you get the name 20 Twen?
I used to battle at The Shelter in St. Andrew’s . Proof of D-12 would host and back then I went by 20/20. Being a battle rapper I felt I needed something catchy . Eventually all my friends started calling me 20 or Twen for short and I liked it better so that’s how I arrived at 20 Twen .
Describe your music in three words?
I think three words that describe my music are lyrical, original and lasting .
Musical influences?
My musical influences are mainly Eminem, Nas and Jay Z. I respect them and admire the music that they make. Going further back, I’d also include EPMD, Wu-Tang and Big Daddy Kane.
What has been the highlight of your career so far? What’s your next goal to accomplish?
The highlight of my career so far has been the success of my No Feelings Mix Tape. It opened a lot of doors for me. Up next I’ll be releasing radio singles and multiple mix tapes and videos. Also, I’m planning my first tour.
If I was coming to your show for the first time, what can I expect?
If you’re coming to see me perform for the first time expect incredible energy and a memorable show.
What are some Pros and Cons of the music business?
Pros of the music industry are that it allows me to be my own boss. It keeps me busy and its an industry that allows me to get my creations to the public. Cons of the industry are that it is full of people who will try to get over on new comers for financial gain.
What were you doing before the music business?
I’ve always been trying to get into the music industry. From the times when I sold weed to the times I worked any regular job. The goal was always to make music my job .
It was reported that Detroit is having money issues. What do you think Detroit can do to turn that around?
I think Detroit is already on the come up. I think its really up to us as citizens to step up. Support local businesses. The people there can’t tolerate the things that have held the city back all this time
What rappers would you like to collaborate with?
I’d like to collaborate with a lot of artists but Eminem, Nas or Jay Z would be awesome at some point. There are plenty of others is like to work with though .
Any advice for up and coming rappers?
My advice for anyone trying to get into the music industry is to make sure its what you want to do. Its a lot of work and you have to be consistent but the payoff is totally worth it.
