Though the comedy of life is central in this movie it is not without a conscience. The story does not shy away or gloss over the cost of this mad affair, by simply ignoring the complications that are bound to occur. Issues are tackled head on with a humor and wit we’ve all come to recognize in writer/director Nancy Meyer’s work. Meyer’s films include: Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and Father of the Bride all of which feature strong female leads and make humor from the oddest circumstances, without resorting to fart jokes and profanity. It’s Complicated as with most of Meyer’s films bring issues such as aging body image and infidelity to the forefront with so much realness and compassion its hard not to find yourself among the characters she creates.
The all-star cast gave brilliant performances all the way through. Alec Baldwin’s brazenly sexy and over confident Jake was the perfect match for Meryl’s insecure and overly cautious Jane. Their scenes together were full of chemistry and provided enough heat to keep the movie going. Steve Martin’s bumbling suitor brought some good laughs and tenderness to the film. From belly laughs to tender moments there’s never a dull scene. For the low-brow set there’s even a joint smoking scene that is sure to get some laughs out of even the most discerning viewer. With it’s high drama, hilarity and heart, “It’s complicated” is simply entertaining.
IT’S COMPLICATED opens in theaters on Friday, December 25, 2009.
***Today the film received three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture (Comedy/Musical)
