Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, is the latest jukebox musical to open on Broadway. Based on group founder Otis Williams’ 1988 tell-all, the play offers an entertaining glimpse into the lives of one of R&Bs most successful groups. The Temptations have an enduring musical legacy that has spawned over 42 top ten hits, four Grammys and millions of loyal fans. The musical is a tribute to their undeniable influence on pop culture. Actor Derrick Baskin as Otis Williams narrates this epic show, sharing the laughter and heartbreak of life as a Temptation. It is a story of friendship and fame, with each milestone and tragedy of their long career punctuated by their biggest hits. The musical features spirited renditions of My Girl, Cloud Nine, and Ain’t Too Proud To Beg.
Written by Dominique Morisseau and directed by Des McAnuff, the musical is an enthralling escape into a bygone era. In this musical adaptation, Morisseau did not shy away from the difficult topics of segregation, drug use, and domestic violence. She stays true to the book, presenting the group members flaws and all. From their triumphant number one singles to their struggles with addiction, she explores their humanity with reverence and honesty. Morisseau also gives voice to the women behind the men, highlighting the suffering of Otis’ neglected wife Josephine and briefly exploring the explosive relationship between Tammi Terrell and David Ruffin. The musical would be incomplete without acknowledging the passing of four of the founding Temptations. Morisseau gives them a noble send-off allowing each member a final farewell, belting one final tune, striking a signature pose or rolling slowly into darkness.
The cast is a brilliant array of new and seasoned talent featuring powerful vocalists and incredible dancers. The show is carried by the capable Derrick Baskin who takes on the crucial role of Otis Williams. As Williams, Baskin is a brilliant and emotive storyteller, delivering sharp one-liners and impassioned monologues with skill. Singer/Songwriter Jeremy Pope stars as Eddie Kendricks. Pope commands the stage like a veteran taking on Kendricks famous falsetto with ease. His voice soars as he delivers a stunning rendition of Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me). Another standout performance is delivered by Ephraim Sykes as he takes on the role of larger than life frontman David Ruffin. The soulful singer’s over the top personality and trademark dance moves are effortless for Sykes. His masterful showmanship and soulful voice are a stunning tribute to Ruffin’s memory.
