Since its opening in October 2002, the Museum of Sex has been titillating patrons with its carefully curated selection of exhibitions, artifacts, and memorabilia. There have been 30 exhibitions and 6 virtual installations so far, each one an eye-opening glimpse into human sexuality. One of their newest and most popular exhibitions is Super Funland: Journey into the Erotic Carnival. This exhibition is a hands-on thrilling spectacle celebrating sex and intimacy as a wild carnival of images, games, and adult-themed rides.
We dropped by the date night destination on a Thursday to take in the sights and sounds of this enticing adults-only experience. We entered through their gift shop of naughty devices and keepsakes and were ushered to a dark stairwell to start the tour. As with most museums, there is a bit of walking around, so wear comfy shoes as you will be walking up and down stairs to access the exhibits. Our tour started with “Artifacts XXX: Selections From Secret Collections’. This Exhibition is like a time capsule of devices, manuals, and other sex-related materials including items for increasing pleasure and inflicting pain. One of the most fascinating items is a replica of King Edward VII’s baffling sex chair. Though clearly used for sex, scholars and historians are still not clear on why there is room at its base for a third person. The next exhibit was the art installation “F*ck Art: The Body and its Absence. This collection of photographs, paintings, and sculptures celebrate the body and its role in eroticism and sexuality. Though mostly sexual in nature part of the collection explores human interaction and closeness as several couples were photographed in varying states of intimacy. The photos present the uniqueness of each couple as some are playful and free while others are more reserved and sensual. The third exhibition “Porno Chic To Sex Positivity: Erotic Content & The Mainstream, 1960 Till Today” presents a visual history of sex in mass media. From scandals in advertising to music videos the collection shows the evolution of what is deemed acceptable, displaying just how far we’ve come in openly acknowledging our sexual nature.
After a whirlwind of educational content, it was time for fun so we sauntered down a mirrored hall and made our way to Super Funland the final installation. Billed as an adult carnival the interactive display includes several popular carnival experiences reimagined in an erotic way. Some of the highlights included: Jump for Joy’s breast-themed bouncy room, Lucky Lips kissing game, and the Tunnel of Love a 4D movie experience. The bouncy room is fun but relatively small only two may enter at a time. The kissing game is the ultimate in intimacy, as couples are invited to kiss and allow their kissing to be judged by the game. Last but certainly not least the Tunnel of Love is a quick ride including an immersive art film. The chairs jerk and move, water squirts at you, and the seats vibrate as the film takes you on a trippy erotic journey. The experience ends at the Carnal Carnival Bar a much-needed oasis of drinks and revelry. Along with the bar, guests can try pole dancing and even take a ride on a wild and winding slide.
From start to finish The Museum of Sex is an incredible experience. Full of scintillating erotic images it is a fascinating journey into human sexuality that will educate on the past present and future of sexuality as well as encourage self-discovery. The experience is so unique that it will expand to Miami and London later this year. For tickets and more info, visit their website at MuseumofSex.com or find their latest deal on Buckelisters.com.
