Afro Punk started out as a vision by filmmaker James Spooner. His documentary film of the same name explored the the black identity and culture in the punk community across the world. After the film’s release, the Afropunk festival was born in celebration of its music, fashion, and art.Over the course of five years not only have up and coming hardcore and punk bands, with members being predominantly African American, have graced the AfroPunk Stage, but also major artists whose music expand over several genres. Artists such as Murs and Janelle Monaé have performed. This year bands such as The 54, Activator, Game Rebellion, Cipher, Belikos, and The Cool Kids, to name a few, performed on the same stage as Bad Brains and Mos Def.
