Nestled in the heart of Harlem, just a stone’s throw from the iconic Apollo Theater, PB Brasserie stands out as a sophisticated and vibrant addition to the neighborhood’s culinary scene. This expansive establishment, from the mind of acclaimed restaurateur Chef Cisse (of Ponty Bistro fame), is a destination that promises and, for the most part, delivers an elevated dining experience. Stepping into PB Brasserie is a departure from the typical Harlem eatery. The interior is a feast for the eyes, with a grand, regal elegance immediately setting a luxurious tone. Jewel-toned, velvet-tufted furniture is perfectly balanced against ivory marble floors and pearl walls. The flickering candlelight against the royal blue and gold arch-shaped bar creates a romantic and inviting glow.
There’s even a private room with a floor-to-ceiling wine cellar for special occasions. The overall vibe perfectly balances old-world charm and modern elegance, making it an ideal spot for a date night, celebratory dinner, or sophisticated gathering. On weekend nights, the atmosphere can be particularly lively, with a DJ setting a vibrant mood.
The menu is where PB Brasserie truly shines, showcasing a unique and innovative blend of classic French brasserie fare with bold African-inspired flavors. The culinary vision of Chef Cisse is evident in every dish, offering a dining experience that is both refined and deeply rooted in tradition. For starters, the Escargot De Bourgogne is a standout, with the delicate texture of the snails perfectly complemented by a rich garlic herb butter and a hint of cognac. The Lobster Mac and Cheese is also a crowd-pleaser, a decadent and flavorful dish that has been praised by many diners. The menu also features classic steakhouse appetizers like Beef Tartare and French Onion Soup, each executed with a refined touch.
The main courses are centered around expertly prepared steaks and seafood. The Dry Age New York Strip, Rib Eye Steak, and the Grilled Lamb Chops are frequently cited as highlights, known for their tenderness and rich flavor. The restaurant’s commitment to quality is clear in the sourcing of its ingredients, and the steaks are cooked to perfection. For those seeking something from the sea, the Grilled Whole Branzino with root vegetables and the Chilean Sea Bass with garlic spinach are excellent choices. The menu also features inventive dishes like the Moules Africana, which adds a unique twist to a classic French dish. The Lobster and Shrimp Spaghetti will be one of my top choices when I return to the restaurant. You can expect a well-executed, garlic-forward spaghetti with generous, flavorful lobster and shrimp.
PB Brasserie offers an extensive drink menu that complements its cuisine beautifully. The wine list is impressive, with a selection of French and other international wines by the glass and bottle. The cocktails are inventive and well-crafted, with names that pay homage to Harlem and African culture, such as the “Harlem Soul” and “Afro Mule.” The bartender the night of my visit did an amazing job crafting our drinks throughout the night. The presentation was Instagram-worthy, just like the food. My personal favorite and showstopper was the PB 125, a smoked whiskey cocktail with Amaretto and Bitters. It was so good that my guest had to order their own.
I want to point out how our server, Aziz, was friendly and attentive, and very knowledgeable of the menu items. Most of my selections from the menu were because of his recommendations. PB Brasserie is a fantastic addition to Harlem, bringing a taste of downtown dining uptown with a distinct and flavorful twist. The stunning ambiance, coupled with a menu that masterfully fuses French and African cuisine, makes it a must-visit for anyone looking for a unique and memorable dining experience. The overall quality of the food and the beautiful setting make PB Brasserie a shining gem in the neighborhood. It’s a place to linger and savor, to celebrate, and to enjoy a truly special meal.
