Ashley
Looking to find success in her letdown, Ashley began training future contestants, leading one trainee to the title of Miss Maine USA. This protégé then went on to place in the top 5 at the Miss USA competition. Ashley also hosted the 2010 Miss Maine USA pageant. She continued her hosting career as the sports reporter for the 2010 America East Conference men’s and women’s basketball championship tournament and became the face of a popular regional skincare line. Being in the limelight was second nature to Ashley and she is constantly pursuing new challenges. After auditioning to compete on “The Amazing Race,” CBS producers remembered the small town girl and invited her to be a contestant on the hit show “Survivor: Redemption Island,” which led to Ashley being the 3rd runner up on the reality show.
Since the elimination, Ashley has become a certified personal trainer, offering a unique fitness method obtained from her experience in pageant coaching, basketball training and preparing for “Survivor.” Ashley did not win “Redemption Island,” but it has always been her undying determination that pushes her to the next level and this survivor’s success has just begun.
We sat down with the beauty to chat about Fitness, Life, Survivor, among other things…
John Simon Daily: What Certifications do you have?
Ashley Underwood: I am a Registered Nurse, and working toward becoming certified through NASM!
John Simon Daily: Can you tell us about your new fitness program?
Ashley Underwood: My fitness program is a unique blend of circuit workouts based on what I have learned as a professional basketball player, miss USA Contestant, and Survivor contestant. They can be done AT HOME and are geared to help people GET STRONG, GET LEAN, and GET FIT!
John Simon Daily: How you keep a healthy diet when you have to eat out a lot?
Ashley Underwood: I like to cook, but I also LOVE to eat out! The most important thing is portion control! Often times I will ask for a “to-go” box as soon as I get my meal, and put half in a box to take home – so its out of sight, out of mind. I always try to get my veggies in with dinner one way or another – I will get a side salad or get a double side of vegetable medley for example.
John Simon Daily: What is the best piece of diet advice you can give to our readers?
Ashley Underwood: Find what works best FOR YOU! What works for your friend or family member, may not be best for you – little changes to your diet go a long way! Also, don’t totally deprive yourself – if you are craving a cookie – have one, just don’t have ten!
John Simon Daily: Besides fitness, What are you an expert at?
Ashley Underwood: Well, I played basketball my entire life and even professionally overseas, so I like to think I know a thing or two about the sport! Also, Green living! I live on an organic produce farm, and have for the past 15 years – I also eat clean and juice my fruits & veggies!
John Simon Daily: What’s the most daring thing you’ve done?
Ashley Underwood: The most daring thing I’ve done is having competed on the reality show Survivor. People say to me on a daily basis “I could never do that!” .. and its true – a lot of people probably could not, so I am proud to say I hung in there 38 days – next to no food, limited water, and crazy people! 🙂
John Simon Daily: Are you friends with Russell from Survivor?
Ashley Underwood: I didn’t get to know Russell very well – he was on the other tribe, and we never met at the merge. I’ve had a few encounters with him outside of the game, and contrary to what people may think, he’s actually very nice!!
John Simon Daily: What advice would you give to new Survivor contestants?
Ashley Underwood: ALWAYS keep the end in sight – run through every possible scenario you can in your mind and the obvious (but not so obvious) NEVER TRUST ANYONE!
John Simon Daily: Would you do Survivor again?
Ashley Underwood: Absolutely! I would LOVE to go back!
