Wanderlust

After a Summer of work, work, and more work we decided to take a few days of R&R before the holiday season. September through November is considered the off-season for Mexico, so it’s a good time to catch decent deals on travel and accommodations. Unfortunately, this is also the hurricane season which could be disastrous if attempting to travel during this time. Throwing caution to the wind, we booked our trip for late September and ended up with a storm-free week of fun and frivolity. The forecast literally called for Thunderstorms every damn day! It probably only rained for 20 minutes during the entire five days we were in Mexico. Otherwise, it was sunny and hot. We divided our trip into two parts; we spent two days exploring the streets of Playa Del Carmen before heading to The Grand at Moon Palace resort.

The area that is now known as Syracuse wasn’t much of anything more than two centuries ago, but that all changed in the early 1800s. It was inevitable to many, as the land was level, it was near numerous salt supplies, and it would be the perfect spot to connect the eastern and western parts of the state. John Wilkinson thought the village looked quite similar to a city over in Italy, so when it came time to name it in 1820, he gave it the same name. It was then that Syracuse was born, and it became a city once the village and the nearby village of Salina merged.

Cruises on the Hudson are a Summertime thrill that we look forward to every year. The warm breeze and scenic landscape have become a familiar and cherished indulgence. One our favorite ways to cruise is with Classic Harbor Line. Their well-managed fleet always provides a fun, safe experience. Their most luxurious vessels are the Manhattan and Manhattan II. Each yacht is designed with classic details, featuring a bright interior lounge below as well as a magnificent outer deck with seating. Last year we spent a full day on their cruise to Poughkeepsie. This year we decided to try their Bear Mountain excursion. The Bear Mountain cruise begins at pier 62 in Chelsea, from there it’s a three-hour cruise to Bear Mountain State Park. The ship docks for three full hours at the park before heading back to Chelsea.

Even though it doesn’t quite feel like it here in New York City, Summer is almost here. Instead of walking fast with our heads down to avoid the win, our faces will be tiled up towards the sun trying to soak in the warmth. Although the city is a great place to be in the summer, you may find yourself wanting to get away from the bustle of the city for a day or two. New York state has loads of cities with fun summer options for New Yorkers to take a break. Rather it be just you, a couples trip, a day out with friends, or a family trip there is something to do.

Travel agencies are slowly dying out. Booking your own travel arrangements has become as easy making a phone call. With the click of a button, an entire vacation package can be purchased. Though the need for a travel agent is dwindling companies like Mr. & Mrs. Smith are flourishing, by offering unique experiences for travelers. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a travel club that specializes in small boutique hotels. We met with the founders and some of their club members for an evening of cocktails and a panel discussion on the future of travel. The intimate gathering was hosted by Public a fairly new boutique hotel owned by real estate mogul Ian Schrager.

Recently, we stopped by the I Love New York 2017 Winter Media Marketplace at Tavern on the Green. At the event, we got a chance to learn more about the tourism in New York, as well as, meet with New York State regional and ski area representatives for the upcoming Winter season. A visit to New York City is not complete until you have a chance to cruise the Hudson River. There are many options in this city for river cruises. However, if you prefer elegant and intimate experiences than the excursions offered by Classic Harbor Line are for you.

Cruising along the Hudson is one of the things we look forward to every spring. The view of the infamous NYC skyline and the tranquility of sailing is an experience that never gets old. A few weeks ago we upgraded our usual cruise, with a wine and cheese pairing class aboard Classic Harbor Line‘s Manhattan II. This particular cruise is about 2 hours long and features wines from all over the world paired with artisan cheeses all presented by Wendy Crispell, a certified wine and cheese educator.
