by xoJohn

The Tribeca Film Festival returns to New York City from April 24 to May 5. The Tribeca Film Festival will feature 103 titles. Expect world premieres of Georgetown, The Kill, Team, Dreamland, to name a few.

The 2019 feature film selection is as follows:

U.S. NARRATIVE COMPETITION

Tribeca’s U.S. Narrative Competition showcases extraordinary work from breakout independent voices and distinguished filmmaking talent. These ten world premieres will vie for the Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Actor, and Best Actress. Last year, the award for Best Narrative Feature went to Kent Jones’ Diane while Jeffrey Wright was awarded Best Actor for his role in O.G. Other previous films from this section include Reed Morano’s Meadowland (2015), Ingrid Jungermann’s Women Who Kill (2016), and Nia DaCosta’s Little Woods (2018).

Director: Pietra Brettkelly

Screenwriter: Pietra Brettkelly

Cast: Guo Pei, Philip Treacy, Wendi Murdoch, Godfrey Deeny

Guo Pei has been designing in China for more than three decades, but the western audience may only know her as the woman who created the stunning garment Rihanna wore when she owned the 2015 China: Through the Looking Glass Met Gala red carpet. In Yellow is Forbidden, Pietra Brettkelly follows the designer after that time as she moves through every detail to become an invited member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture – a society so exclusive only twenty-one members currently exist today. In this documentary, Brettkelly intended to tell the story of loss through the decline of haute couture, but the more powerful storyline that is quietly unearthed is the duality that exists within the designer’s world.

The Tribeca Film Festival has begun and this year John Legend and Sara Bareilles made an appearance in “Tribeca Talks: Storytellers” where Sara interviewed/discussed with John about his life and career. Starting off Sara asked John about how music came into his life as a child. John started learning to play the piano when he was five and was actively involved in music at church. It wasn’t till he was older that he began to listen to genres other than Gospel and Contemporary Christian music because that was all that was played in his house. His parents divorced when he was young and from there he was able to rebel a bit and start listening to other genres.
