You’re Invited: Taste of the Upper West Side in NYC

by xoJohn

We’ve missed outdoor events in NYC and we’re glad they’re finally coming back. One of our favorites is returning, the Taste of the Upper West Side (TUWS) presented by American Airlines and Mastercard. The two-day culinary extravaganza features a stellar lineup of chefs and mixologists and will take place on Friday, Oct 1st and Saturday, Oct 2nd.

TUWS kicks off their annual two-night, open-air food event with Grillin’ in the City where over 20 popular Upper West Side restaurants grill up their favorite menu items. New to the Friday night event this year is an exciting collaboration with Whiskies of the World. Taste and sample various whiskies from near and far. Whether it be Kentucky bourbon or a great scotch from Scotland, this pop-up event is sure to delight guests with brands like Balcones, Copper Dog, Uncle Nearest, Westward, and more! Also making a debut is TUWS’ first-ever Biergarten in honor of Oktoberfest featuring a variety of fall sips and beer-inspired cocktails curated by neighborhood favorites Tiki Chick and Nobody Told Me.

Elevated cuisine is the focus of day 2 or Best of the West, presented by Park West Village. This day will celebrate Upper West Side dining destinations with prepared nibbles of their best cuisines. Ticket Holders for Best of the West’s VIP Reception will enjoy exclusive 1-hour priority access to bites, sips, and local culinary stars. Best of the West will also play host to Bubbly Under the Stars, a bar experience celebrating all things sparkling in our open-air tasting tent. This year’s Best of the West presented by Park West Village will honor the perseverance of restaurant owners on the Upper West Side.

Across the two nights, several restaurants will make their TUWS debuts including Dagon, Boka, Pekarna, Covacha, Sushi 85, Manhattanville Market’s Butterfunk Biscuit Co., The Baylander, Felice, Tasca and Kissaki. Live music by acclaimed group Project Orange Music will heighten the ambiance of the Upper West Side’s most anticipated event of the year.

Safety is TUWS’s top priority. Taste of the Upper West will require all guests to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Tickets are on sale now. General Admission for Grillin’ in the City is priced at $99. Best of the West VIP tickets are priced at $215 and General Admission is $135. Proceeds from Taste of the Upper West Side 2021 will go back into the community and help fund neighborhood projects through the Columbus Avenue Business Improvement District, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

Exploring Meatless Options with Gardein

by Desha Winborne

Plant-based diets which were once met with skepticism are slowly becoming the norm for more and more people across the globe. Aside from the obvious health benefits, going without animal flesh for a few times a week could significantly impact our environment and end world hunger. While we aren’t quite ready to give up wings and things for good we are open to having one or two meatless meals a week. Luckily brands like Gardein are stepping up to the challenge and creating products to encourage carnivores to enjoy more plant-based meals.

Overall: A cozy neighborhood shop for authentic Mexican eats and scrumptious margaritas.

For the last five years, family-owned Citrico has been serving authentic home-style Mexican Cuisine, in Prospect Heights. This small unassuming bistro is located a few short blocks from The Brooklyn Museum and has become a favorite among its patrons. The restaurant is known for its welcoming atmosphere and traditional recipes. Toriko NY (Review)

by xoJohn

Location: 76 Carmine Street, New York NY 10014

Cuisine: Japanese Omakase

Cost: $$$$

Overall: A mind-blowing culinary treat that is sure to satisfy your foodie curiosity.

Anime and Manga fans know Toriko as a popular series in which the titular character is on a quest for the ultimate feast. For us, Toriko is a fascinating new eatery in Greenwich Village, featuring Omakase style service with a focus on Yakitori or skewered meats. An Omakase style service leaves your entire meal in the hands of the chef.

Restaurant Review: Barolo East

by Sia-Alika Battle

Location: 214 East 49th Street, New York, NY 10017

Cuisine: Northeastern Italian

Best Dish: Veal Milanese. A breaded veal chop pounded to a quarter inch thinness served on the bone topped with arugula. Served with lemon to add acidity and marry flavors of the fresh greens and tender veal chop.

Cost: $$$

Overall:  A new restaurant with old world charm. Barolo East has opened just six months ago but has already become a neighborhood favorite. The welcoming outdoor patio makes for a wonderful al fresco dining experience. The brick and wood indoor décor makes for a calming dining environment.
