Mavis Staples Takest SummerStage

Who: Mavis Staples

What: City Parks Foundation kicked off the 2017 SummerStage season with soul & gospel icon Mavis Staples and musician and soul artist Toshi Reagon on Saturday, June 3rd at Central Park. Ms. Staples delivered an electrifying performance to the packed crowd at Central Park, showcasing her impressive vocal range. She performed the classic hit “Respect Yourself” and ended the evening with her legendary hit, “I’ll Take You There”. Ms. Staples is currently touring in support of her latest record, Livin’ On A High Note.

As the summer slowly comes to a close, there is an instant rush to take advantage of as much of the free and exciting events the city has to offer. This summer SummerStage has not let New York City and its surrounding boroughs down with an outstanding line up in music, dance, and theater. If you didn’t spend at least one day out of the week at a SummerStage event, you truly missed out.

SummerStage | Gil Scott-Heron & Common

Anyone who calls themselves a hip hop head should know Gil Scott-Heron. Like James Brown, Fela Kuti, and Michael Jackson, Gil Scott-Heron’s music has been sampled by many producers. Not to mention Gil Scott-Heron has influenced many in pushing the envelope in their artistry and voicing their political views.
