At some point in your social life dinner and a movie, bowling and Broadway shows will cease to be the amazing thrill it once was. If you have even the slightest bit of creativity tipsy crafts could save your social life. The concept is simple, for a small fee you and a few friends can meet in one of the city’s hot night spots for drinks, apps and a creative class. The classes offered include jewelry making, acrylic painting, and watercolor painting. We dropped in on an acrylic painting class at Proper West a social club and bar in Midtown’s west side. We were led to one of the private rooms for our “Class.” The space was outfitted with bar and bartender as well as small work stations with an easel, canvas, and brushes. Before we got started we stepped up to the bar to get some cocktails for the tipsy portion of our evening. By the time we finished our first round class was underway.

Over the holiday season, XOJOHN had the pleasure of being introduced to the works of the gifted painter Mark DeMaio. Mr. DeMaio is currently showing an exciting, eye-catching collection that combines recognizably famous cartoon characters with religious iconography to deliver a pop art tableau that will shock and amaze the viewer. The images mix childhood memories with the Biblical stories, the iconic Nativity Scene is re-cast with Olive Oyl as the Virgin Mary is a particularly affecting tableau. This controversial subject, in conjunction with the artist’s signature use of bold, vibrant colors, texture and unpredictable techniques reflect the insight and daring statements that Mr. DeMaio has to share with his audiences.
