#NYFWM: David Hart S/S 2018

by John Stolen

David Hart takes a vacation from trend – and heads to Cuba! While other designers and labels are still working in the colors of the year into their collection, Hart is traveling the globe and becoming a true trendsetter. Though, arguably the biggest trend these days is going to Cuba during this sweet period in which the embargo has been lifted. How long anything will last these days balances on the edge of a coin, so it was a timely move to draw inspiration from a world long locked away.

#NYFWM: Landlord Fall/Winter 2017

by John Stolen

Remember High School? Wait – remember that song “Bring it All To Me”? Who was that by? Blaque? There was that line “Are you feelin’ my timbs, my baggy jeans…”

LANDLORD’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection throws me right back into the middle of that – driving around in my 1986 Suburban with my bffs, each and every one of us wearing Timbs and baggy jeans. We were so cool. Sixteen year old me would have gone HAM on this collection, though, because it’s everything I had never (and always) dreamed of. Metallics, cool brights, jeweled embellishments, a sparkly sequin smiley face woven into the hair on the back of one model’s head – seriously, give me a time machine and an unlimited budget and my teenage self would be off the charts happy. But that’s just one side of the collection – the luxe, bedazzled, embellishments and accents, like the lavender (faux?) fur coat (layered under a moss green, canvas utility jacket).

The other side continues the utilitarian theme of the previous 2 collections from this label. Congruency is important in defining a fresh-faced label such as LANDLORD, and to see it so early in is both promising and indicative that it may have some staying power. That said, the first thing that comes to mind is the image of a little boy playing dress-up in his daddy’s closet (tho, maybe that says more about me). Delivering trends is a business decision – imbuing trends with a twist that literally makes the wearer look as though they absconded with papa’s trench, is an artistic license that I’m delighted LANDLORD took. #daddylessons

#NYFW: LaQuan Smith Spring 2017 Collection

by Alissa Wilson

Hey guys,

There is a reason why celebrities like Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, and more love them some LaQuan Smith. He just gets how to dress a woman in a sexy and fashion forward way without being tacky. For Spring 2017, LaQuan Smith gave us a nature inspired collection. He drew inspiration from the elements of storms, the wind, and lightning. You saw those elements in the spring color palette he chose. White, gray, red, and powder blue were the dominant hues in the collection.

by xoJohn

Fur tails neck-lines, candy-coated dresses and lacy details are all a part of Georgine’s Fall 2016 Collection. Georgine is the vision of Designer Georgine Ratelband, founded in 2011, as a made to measure business, her collection has taken the fashion world over and has been adored by many including Kylie Jenner and Beyoncé. For this season, her focus was on the fairy-tale, with a mix of “Peter Pane” collars and “Cruella de la Ville” fur stoles. The enchanting gowns that draped over the models were quite seductive without showing much skin.

Designers and Noon By Noor founders Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa take an unstructured, relaxed, albeit expected, approach to their Fall 2016 collection that debuted on February 14 at New York City’s The Dock, Skylight Moynihan Station during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.  Combining classic menswear tailoring with fluid feminine silhouettes, the collection features wide-leg mannish pants, silk pajama tops and floor-grazing trench coats with a bathrobe-like coziness in colors of white, sapphire gray, taupe, caramel, and midnight blue.

#NYFW: O’2nd Fall/Winter 2016 Collection

by xoJohn

When you think of a brand that creates effortless looks with hints of modernity for women, make sure O’2nd comes to mind. After their Fall/Winter ’16 Presentation at New York Fashion Week, O’2nd is truly making their own lane in womenswear. O’2nd is a brand that was established in New York, however, its roots lie in Seoul, South Korea. Being lead by brand director, Minsoo Chung: this collection pushed for originality and expression in bright colors. The details were truly spectacular, including using soft fabrics to mimic fur on a blouse. There was also unexpected attention on specific parts of the clothing, such as the bottom cuffs and coat collars. Their inspiration drew from the Victorian Era, with an embrace of the high-vintage theme. American artist Frank Stella’s black and white artwork was also additional inspirations that made subtle details into the clothing, especially with the cut-out shirt contrasts.
