The average height and size of an American woman is 5 foot 4, size 16. The average size of a model is under 6 in missy, 10 in plus and both are expected to exceed 5’8 in height. This leaves a staggering disparity in how the average woman compares to her print and digital counterparts. Essentially shorter curvier women are the norm and yet vastly underrepresented. Though they make up the majority, this group is relatively unseen. Visual representation by brands, networks, and organizations opt for taller women to showcase their products or represent brands. In their efforts to celebrate their actual consumers, some brands have steered away from the size 10 and employed larger models like Tess Holliday and Simone Mariposa.

Taking A Trip Down Memory Lane

In preparation for my sister’s sweet sixteen, we gathered around my mom’s table with warm mugs of coffee, flavored with soothing Classic Vanilla Coffee-mate.  We looked over many old photos to find the perfect picture for a collage that would be displayed at the event. Among them was one of my favorite pictures; my sassy little sister wearing my favorite hat and posing for the camera. My little diva wasn’t always one of my favorite people.

Blogging My Way Through New York City

by xoJohn

How do you normally start your day? For me, it all depends on the day. For instance, Mondays I may roll out of bed a little upset because the reality of the weekend being over sets in. Luckily I have my favorite quote as a pick me up. The most exciting part about blogging is the fact that we can bring you content from pretty much anywhere in the world. In recent weeks, I found myself drafting up articles via my smartphone while riding the subway. It’s not the most ideal setting but in order to distract me from the constant hustle and bustle of New York City commuters, it works.

When I first started blogging it was a simple hobby that, unbeknownst to me, would soon become a full fledge business. During the inception of xojohn.com in 2009, people’s perception of bloggers were very low and I recall hearing naysayers saying things like, “Bloggers sit at home in their parents’ basement and talk crap about people.” Or “They don’t have a real job!” Blogging today has become a major part of how you, the readers, get your news. All of the major print publications have blogs now, although some like to shy away from the word, but let’s face it. It’s a blog.
