CMJ 2012: Tattoo U Panel

by Simone Southwell

While checking out the 2012 CMJ Music Festival/Marathon I had the opportunity to be a part of some really cool and informative panels. An interesting panel that I got to check out was the Tattoo U panel. This panel was about any and everything tattoos. The panel was made up of Jordy Trachtenberg, a music industry veteran and devoted tattoo collector, Jason June, a tattoo artist at Three Kings Tattoo, Jes Irwin, a tattoo artist, Alex McWatt, Founder and tattoo artist at Three Kings Tattoo, and Todd Weinberger, the Creative Director at Inked Magazine.

The CMJ Music Festival was alive and kicking this past weekend in New York. I had the opportunity to check out The Real Deal Breakdown of Branded Placement panel at the NYU Kimmel Center. The panel revolved around the process by which songs get matched up with brands and are used in movies, commercials, and a variety of other mediums. The panel included Bruce MacKenzie, the head of GreenLight Music, Kavi Ohri, the head of Music Dealers’ East Coast Operations, Ryan Wines, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Marmoset Music, Julie Potash, a singer/song writer, and Richard Stumpf, President of Imagem Music.

In the revolving door of hip-hop, the door has been slow moving for female MCs. Nicki Minaj is currently dominating the female MC genre and Kreayshawn is making a buzz. Audra the Rapper, signed to Rick Ross’ Maybach Music, is ready for everyone to know her name.

It’s that time of the year when New York City is taken over by the CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival. It’s a time to hop from showcase to showcase  in the hopes of being the first to hear the next future superstar.

CMJ 2010 | Interview with Peter Hadar

by Dana Bingham

As CMJ came to a close, the real marathon began as I scrambled to catch as many concerts as I possible could. Lucky for me I only needed one artist to sum up my 2010 CMJ experience, Peter Hadar. I first came across Peter Hadar in 2008 on Love Will off of Ra-Re Valverde’s A Beautiful Mess album. His smooth voice made me take note of the singer/songwriter who as written for the likes of Joe, Carl Thomas, Eric Roberson, to name a few. With his single Full Time Lover, Peter is gearing up for the release of a new album Take Off Victoria expected out Spring 2011.

Check out JSD’s interview with the “cool weirdo”, Peter Hadar as we discuss everything from music and fashion to Miles Davis and Jean-Michel Basquiat. While you wait for the release of his new album, be sure you download is other available projects She’s Four Months, Well Dressed for the Art Show, and Memories of the Heart.

CMJ 2010 | Interview with Calibro 35

by Dana Bingham

Calibro 35

Anyone who has had the opportunity to engulf themselves into the CMJ Music Marathon can honestly say it’s almost like world traveling without needing an airplane. CMJ covers all music genres from all over the country and other parts of the world. One thing is for sure language may divide us, but music can always bring us to a common ground.
