Film Review: LIFE

A team of celestial explorers on a fact-finding mission unearth an organism from the soil on Mars. The excited astronauts report their findings to Earth and celebration commences. The masses are fascinated by the discovery and the team is encouraged to learn as much as possible. Unfortunately, elation soon turns to terror as tiny organism quickly evolves into a monstrous creature beyond their expectations and control. What was once regarded as a harmless creature morphs into Earth’s biggest threat which forces the crew into a fight to the death to save Earth from annihilation.

The 16th annual Tribeca Film Festival will take place April 19-30 and opens with the world premiere of the feature documentary Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives at Radio City Music Hall, followed by a special concert featuring performances by Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson, Earth, Wind & Fire, and more. Today, the festival announced The Godfather and The Godfather Part II close the festival with back-to-back screenings at Radio City Music Hall on Saturday, April 29, followed by a once-in-a-lifetime panel discussion with Academy Award®-winning director Francis Ford Coppola and actors Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, and Robert De Niro. That’s how you close a festival.

Netflix just released a cheeky first teaser for Nakeda Netflix original film starring Marlon Wayans (White Chicks, A Haunted House 1 and 2Fifty Shades of Black) and Regina Hall (Think Like a Man, the Scary Movie franchise), and directed by Michael Tiddes (A Haunted House 1 and 2Fifty Shades of Black).

War Machine stars Brad Pitt, Emory Cohen, Topher Grace, Anthony Michael Hall, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Meg Tilly, Tilda Swinton, and Sir Ben Kingsley. The Netflix original film is inspired by the book The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan by the late journalist Michael Hastings. This absurdist tale and pitch-black war story takes on hot-shot General Glenn McMahon, a man caught up in a modern war machine that keeps on churning, seemingly to no end.

Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal Head to Netflix in Okja

From visionary filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, the creative mind behind the worldwide sensation Snowpiercer comes the new global adventure Okja. The film follows the epic journey of Mija, a young girl who must risk everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend – a massive animal named ‘Okja.’  The Netflix Original Film stars Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Giancarlo Esposito, Steven Yeun, Lily Collins and newcomer Seo Hyun An.

Okja will premiere exclusively on Netflix on June 28.

Movie Review: The Great Wall

Guns for hire travel to Asia in search of the next great weapon, black powder. Their quest is interrupted by a massive army charged with protecting the great wall, who holds them as prisoners. Unfortunately for the mercenaries, their captors are knee deep in a battle to save their land from a horde of angry bloodthirsty beasts. Matt Damon stars in this grand action adventure as “William,” a talented soldier who brings his combat expertise to the far east. Unlike some epic battle films, there isn’t a long tedious build up to the action.

2017 Oscar Nominations

Nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were announced live today. Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs was joined by Demian Bichir, Dustin Lance Black, Glenn Close, Guillermo del Toro, Marcia Gay Harden, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Jason Reitman, Gabourey Sidibe, and Ken Watanabe in announcing the 24 award categories via pre-taped video footage filmed in six cities around the globe.
