Parkchoonmoo Spring/Summer 2011

by Christine Tsang

Over at Exit Art, new up and coming favorite designer Choonmoo Park presented my favorite show of New York Fashion Week. It was an ethereal display of white, grey and sharp contrasting royal blues in avant-garde styles. While the collection and color palette remained simple, there were still very much layering and flowing pieces down the runway.

Opened by a 30-minute performance by Spanish rock artist Lily Vasquez, the Annie S. Intimates presentation was quite a upbeat show held at the Midtown Loft and Terrace event space. Ms. Segura incorporates the 1950’s burlesque styles into her spring collection, drawing from the emphases of curves and voluptuousness.

The title “My Black Wedding Dress” reflects her struggle between traditional femininity and luxury. Ms. Yang explains, “Luxury both fuels and entraps dreams in material goods.” A black wedding dress contradicts traditional expectations and gives birth to a redesign.

Six years into the business, Yoana Baraschi is a favorite among the young and stylish of Hollywood. The spring collection brings west coast cool over with flirty prints, ruffles, and loosely draped tops. Bright colors bursts through the dark backdrop in florals, patterns and solids.

Simon Spurr Spring/Summer 2011

by Christine Tsang

If you have a penchant for a well-tailored suit, then the latest Simon Spurr collection will indulge you. Up and coming British designer has all eyes on his work, including Anna Wintour, herself, as spotted attending his show, held at Exit Art — offsite from Lincoln Center. Inspired by the English tradition of a well tailored 3-piece suit, the collection was filled by impeccable pieces in warm and neutral hues and a few plaid patterns, but not enough to overpower the simplicity of the line.

Thuy Spring/Summer 2011

by Christine Tsang

Across town, on the east of Manhattan, Thuy Diep showed his spring and summer collection in the Audi Forum. The bright yellows instantly brought sunshine into the maze of a runway during that gloomy and drab day. The Vietnamese designer took to her signature daring and bold cuts that still flatter the female body.

NYFW | Matthew Ames Spring 2011

by Christine Tsang

In a sea of sand taupe was rich brights that highlighted Ames‘ simple collection down the runway. The looks were clean and relaxed as defined by the shoes all the models were wearing, flat sandals. To one’s amusement, the down to earth pieces were full of long skirts and high slits.
