Running has always been a love and hate relationship with me. As much as I hated running, I always found myself up early in the morning with thousands of other runners eager to cross the finish-line. I first heard of Black Girls Run when I ran a women’s 10k race in Central Park. In a sea of thousands of female runners, a young African-American woman stood out from all the rest with a shirt that simply said  “Preserve the Sexy/Black Girls Run”. I couldn’t wait to finish the race to find out what Black Girls RUN! was all about.

Eric Roberson with Chubb Rock

To release 8 albums on your own independent record label is a huge accomplishment.  Such is the case for two-time Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Eric Roberson, who will release Mister Nice Guy on November 8th.

CMJ 2011: A Conversation with Nikki Jean

by Dana Bingham

NJ

Flipping through the CMJ guide, it’s often hard to decide who to see perform. Sometimes you have to rely on recommendations from fellow CMJ attendees and sometimes you just have to go on a gut feeling that the show is going to be awesome. There are also times when a name jumps out at you that you can’t resist! For me, that name was Nikki Jean.

In the revolving door of hip-hop, the door has been slow moving for female MCs. Nicki Minaj is currently dominating the female MC genre and Kreayshawn is making a buzz. Audra the Rapper, signed to Rick Ross’ Maybach Music, is ready for everyone to know her name.

It’s that time of the year when New York City is taken over by the CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival. It’s a time to hop from showcase to showcase  in the hopes of being the first to hear the next future superstar.

PB
Peter Baldwin’s smooth electrifying voice and captivating lyircs are bound to hypnotize any ears that take a listen. His tone is a melting pot of Jazz, Pop, Blues, and R&B into what Peter labels as Alternative Soul. After the released of his 2008 unplugged album I Was Here, Peter created a buzz opening for such greats as Earth, Wind, & Fire, Joss Stone, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, and Aloe Blacc. Peter recently released his self produced and arranged album Peter Baldwin In Vodville, and spoke exclusively to JohnSimonDaily.
