#NYFW: LaQuan Smith Spring 2017 Collection

by Alissa Wilson

Hey guys,

There is a reason why celebrities like Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, and more love them some LaQuan Smith. He just gets how to dress a woman in a sexy and fashion forward way without being tacky. For Spring 2017, LaQuan Smith gave us a nature inspired collection. He drew inspiration from the elements of storms, the wind, and lightning. You saw those elements in the spring color palette he chose. White, gray, red, and powder blue were the dominant hues in the collection.

Brother and sister design duo of Nicholas K presented a rather unique spring collection. The Spring 2016 show opened with a white parachute trench and then followed with a white nylon windbreaker pullover and pant combo. For this spring collection, they were inspired by the occupations of their brother who was a NAVY Seal and father who was a flight surgeon. They appropriately titled their collection, “Terminal Velocity.” This collection of 50 looks featured silk maxi dresses, dip-dyed poncho’s, and lightweight denim dresses and joggers.

With Custo Barcelona, each season his collections get better like wine. The brand has always taken the more is a better approach when styling runway looks. Much like past designs, Custo Barcelona spring collection was an explosion of bright colors and bold prints. The designer’s innate use of color is exceptional. The spring collection consisted of uncommon geometric prints. It also had a youthful appeal with cute little printed spaghetti strap dresses, flowy printed maxi dresses, and skirts. The mixing of textures and colors at times proved to be a little too busy. Custo described his spring collection as “Slow” referencing “a culinary movement that rejects the standardization of taste.”

À MOI Spring/Summer 2015 Collection

by Alissa Wilson

Effortless, easy, classic, and sleek describe A Moi’s spring 2015 collection. Drawing inspiration from her ancestral past, designer Alejandra Alonso created a collection that was all about ” rejecting the conventional and creating new realities.” A color palette of cool soft colors like navy, white, and powder blue was the backdrop for embroidered dresses, jacquard cardigans, and asymmetrical skirts. The collection offered a revered sophistication. Texture played a key role in Alonso’s use of crisp organza, soft Italian cotton, and lambskin.

Cushnie et Ochs Fall/Winter 2014 Collection

by Alissa Wilson

Designers Michelle Ochs and Carly Cushnie definitely know how to bring sexy back. From looking at my curves body con dresses to sleek and sophisticated looks, Cushnie’s fall collection was excellent. The designs were modern but had a 90’s vibe. Slightly reminiscent of when Tom Ford was at Gucci. I loved the draped off-the-shoulder dresses, fitted knits, and structured leather jackets, as well as the patent leather skater skirts. The harness necklines on dresses and tops were very bad-girl-esque. Texture played a significant role in the collection with richly teal-colored velvet dresses accented with high splits and super deep v’s. There was a lot of exposed skin with their very low-cut dresses. Even model Karolina Kurkova rocked a strapless lace cutout top and matching skirt.

Reem Acra Spring 2014 Collection

by Alissa Wilson

Inspired by international nightlife and its glamorous appeal, Reem Acra’s collection was nothing short of fabulous. From the first embroidered black bias cut chiffon lace-up detail dress that came down the runway to the applique black tulle ball gown that closed the show. With base-pumping disco music blasting through the speakers, for a moment it felt like we time-traveled back to the seventies and we were at Studio 54 on a Saturday night. Reem Acra’s take on global style is dead on with sexy sleek cuts and her use of luxe fabrics. A well-traveled woman will be drawn to the spring collection for its vivid colors of poppy red and orange as well as the mix of classic patterns like houndstooth and polka dots.

There was a bevy of dresses with bias cuts, sexy deep v-necklines, and high splits. Reem Acra’s use of chiffon on jackets, skirts, and gowns gave a light airy feel to the alluring seductive collection. Once the models did their final walk, all you heard was the crowd cheering and shaking their heads up and down as a gesture of approval at the impressive spring collection. Too bad, we are just gearing up for fall, because any woman would be ready to wear those dresses now.

Duro Olowu for JCPenney 15

During New York Fashion Week, JCPenney took the opportunity to debut its newest designer collaboration with print master Duro Oluwu. Nowadays everyone and their mama can’t wait to get their hands on a designer piece and thank God for budget-friendly stores like JCP for making designer duds available for those of us who have to have a clothing budget.

Custo Barcelona Fall/Winter 2013 Collection

by Alissa Wilson

Waiting in line to see the Custo Barcelona Fall 2013 show was like waiting in line to get into the hottest club in the city. The Box Theater at Lincoln Center was packed literally from wall to wall with people. The fall collection offered a wealth of luxe knits for men and women and a slight overload of prints and overdone styling. That’s not to say that the collection didn’t have some great looks because it did. Their take on men’s suits was refreshing with bold prints in muted colors. The styling of the suits was quite questionable because shawls were thrown over them. There were even man capes included in the collection.
