Prince George Ballroom on Manhattan’s east side was the place to be on February 18th 2010. It was here that Leifsdottir presented “The Catalonia Affair” a collection of flirty perfection for Fall 2010/11. The room was packed with photographers, buyers and well wishers each vying for space in their attempts to land the perfect shot. Which was an easy feat as models were within arms reach on a tiny stage. The models pranced and flirted upon the stage in a rotating dance of sophisticated and instantly wearable pieces. The line which made its debut in 2008, is the brain child of Finland designer Johanna Uurasjarvi. As is the signature element with this designer each piece was crafted with antique details and a flirty silhouette.
Inspired by a summer trip to Barcelona, there is a romanticism to this line that is unmistakable. Sweet layered ruffles, bright lady-like florals and flattering cuts made for a timeless collection of retro inspired pieces. The models pranced and played along the tiny stage showing just how comfortable these pieces were. It was refreshing to see how the clothes “wear” as opposed to a runway show where they simply hang on a model as she struts down the runway. These models worked every piece with grace and style, standing sitting and in some instances dancing. As an added bonus pieces were close enough to see all the fine detailing as well as the brilliant accessories. Accessories included ornate chandelier earrings, delicate lace hosiery and castanets. Though we’re not sure how castanets may fit into our daily wardrobe, if they are as much fun as the model made them seem we may have to invest in a set.
One of our favorite pieces of the night was a floor length ruffled skirt. Not quite what one would expect to find in a sportswear showing it was a shinning layered testament of Leifdottir’s commitment to making flirty feminine pieces with a vintage flair. Another of our favorite looks was a black ¾ length coat adorned with satin ruffle trim and topped by a pillow of white ruffles. Worn with a sky high pair of booties added a modern spin on a classic look.
New and yet familiar Leifsdottir provided the fashion savvy with a dizzying array of options for every taste and style. A leather mini paired with a cropped wool jacket and coral blouse is just one example of how this lines find the parallels between old and new, and weaves them together seamlessly, in an assortment of interchangeable pieces. Simultaneously retro and modern Leifsdottir is a brand with a mission, creating a romance between practical and whimsy this collection was an affair to remember.
